The Positive Development of Adolescent Girls
For more than 100 years, the Junior League of Boston has been strengthening communities in Boston by focusing a large portion of its volunteer and financial resources on supporting young girls through our “The Positive Development of Adolescent Girls” (PDAG) initiative. JL Boston partners with local schools, Boys & Girls Clubs and other non-profits to provide out-of-school time programming and mentors for adolescent girls, ages 10-18, within Greater Boston.
Many girls struggle with issues of self-identity, confidence, and social expectations that prevent them from taking on leadership roles. Through our programs, girls will explore the definition of leadership, learn to understand their unique gifts, and acquire the skills necessary to confidently share those gifts and take advantage of the opportunities around them. The programs feature guided discussions, fun activities, one-on-one mentoring, field trips and guest speakers, all aimed to expose the girls to new ways of looking at their communities and empower them to make choices that will positively influence the world around them.
Mentoring relationships have been proven to help girls overcome these obstacles and to improve the quality of the lives. PDAG integrates the philosophy and the spirit of JL Boston’s mission by giving adolescent girls a foundation of life skills to help them bring out the best in themselves and their communities.
In 2009 – 2010, the PDAG community projects are:

Other Community Service Projects
The Junior League of Boston is proud to work with several local non-profit organizations that are aligned with our mission and focus areas. The JLB Digital Impact program works with the Cambridge chapter of Reading for the Blind & Dyslexic, where our JL Boston volunteers help to increase the number of audio recordings of books for visually-disabled individuals. JLB Dress for Success partners with Dress for Success Boston to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support, and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Foster Care Review works with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families to ensure that foster children/ teens are safe, receiving necessary services, and placed in appropriate environments.
In addition to the PDAG projects, the Junior League of Boston is also proud to participate with other non-profit organizations in the Boston area by providing concentrated numbers of volunteers to staff charitable events through our Done-in-a-Day program and JLB Events.
