Letter from the President – January 1st, 2015

We are halfway through our 108th year at the Junior League of Boston and I am thrilled that we are heading toward a bright new future. This organization is special because members decide how they want to enact change and – working together – they have the power to make the difference.
I want to give people an easier way to be more autonomous, more competent, more generous, not to slot them into a scripted volunteer experience. I challenge you as members of the Junior League of Boston to figure out how we want our organization to matter – how to make the mission matter.

Flip the Switch

This weekend I had the honor of representing the Junior League of Boston at the Prudential Center’s 31 Nights of Light. Each evening in December, the top of the Prudential Tower—the second tallest building in Boston—is relit with a color that represents one of the many philanthropic institutions that help make New England great.

Development Event – The Nutcracker

Written by Taylor Shepard. Attending The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition in my family—it just wouldn’t be Christmas without it! My younger sister was a part of a professional dance company growing up so, in turn, every Christmas upon my return from college I was enlisted by my mother to be the ‘junior costume… Read More

Happy Friendsgiving!

Here at the Junior League of Boston, when we aren’t promoting health and wellness in our neighborhoods, there are two things that we do well – create community and throw a great party! That’s why we love the idea of Friendsgiving.

Introducing the JL Boston Run Club at Germaine Lawrence!

For over 17 years, Junior League of Boston has partnered with the Germaine Lawrence residential program for teenage girls helping more than 400 girls in a one-on-one mentoring program. Youth Villages – Germaine Lawrence campus (YV-GL) is an 86-bed campus in Arlington, MA where girls ages 13-18 live, receive specialized treatment, and attend school. Before arriving at YV-GL, many of the girls ran away from home trying to escape traumatic home environments. During their stay at YV-GL, the girls do not spend time with many adults other than paid staff; JL Boston members provide positive female role models that might otherwise be absent from their lives.

Have Fun and Do Good With JL Boston!

The JL Boston blog has showcased several of the community projects staffed by our members including a program that matches mentors with college women and one that provides professional attire to homeless women who are interviewing for jobs. We can’t do any of this valuable work without help from the greater Boston community.

A Tale of 8 Cities – The JL Transfer Experience

As anyone who has moved can attest to, creating a life in a new city is more than just finding a new hair stylist, although that is an extremely important task! I once calculated that I have lived in eight cities and three countries since I graduated from University. This may sound like a lot or a little to you depending on your own family culture. What I can say is that my move to Boston was by far the smoothest and most welcoming I have had. This is due, in part, to how fantastic the people of Boston are, but for me the biggest difference is that this was the first move I made as a member of the Junior League.
